Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by weakness or paralysis of the muscles used for speech. The following areas of speech may be impaired: articulation, rate, volume, prosody and respiratory support. The speech of an individual suffering from dysarthria sounds slurred and is very difficult to understand. Dysarthria is the result of damage to the central or peripheral nervous system.

Common causes include:

  • stroke
  • brain tumor
  • head trauma
  • neuromuscular diseases
